Oil paint, oil pastel. 22x 28"
Commence
Similar to "Corridors," "Commence" is about the multiple paths taken in life and the opposing forces offering their guidance along them. This is portrayed through the brightly colored pathways leading to and from the borders of the painting. The arms of the angels and branches of the trees, which point in opposite directions, represent how certain paths in life may offer completely different outcomes. By mirroring the realistically rendered elements with their oil pastel counterparts, the contrast is made clear and allows one to stand apart; perhaps one way is better.
Here, the checkered patterns take on a new meaning; they imply the start of a race. However, this race pertains to embarking on a new path in life. Experiences in life can lead one to learn that the previous road taken may not be the best, and that we must learn to trust those who want to help guide us in a better way.
